Abstract :
Background and Aim: a commentary for diagnosing of prosoplasia in odontogenic cysts. Prosoplasia is a forward metaplasia that represent the advanced and complicated cell function. Transformation of odontogenic epithelium from squamous into a mucous secreting cell is an example of prosoplasia. Mucous cell differentiation has been reported in some inflammatory and developmental odontogenic cysts. The aim was to collect and analyzed Material and Method: The histogenesis and diagnostic features of prosoplasia in odontogenic cysts were reserved and analyzed. Results: Based on researches, the source of mucous cells in odontogenic epithelia was embryological pluripotent cells or epithelial lining of the nasal cavity. Another theory was environmental stimulations to cellular trans-differentiation. Mucous cell prosoplasia has been reported in radicular cysts, dentigerous cysts and dental follicle. Dentigerous cysts were more prone to mucous cell prosoplasia. The location of mucous cells were different from scattered to collections of cells in superficial and spinous layers. The mucous cells had different phenotypes comprising the cells that producing acidic mucin, producing neutral mucin and producing both acidic and neutral mucin. Some histopathologic similarities between glandular odontogenic cyst and odontogenic cysts with mucous prosoplasia have been noted. Although the existence of mucous cells in the epithelium of odontogenic cysts, especially the dentigerous cysts, may reflect the prosoplasia, but may indicate the development of the intra-osseous mucoepidermoid carcinoma. Conclusion: Careful examination of serial sectioned material may need to complete the diagnosis of mucous cells prosoplasia in odontogenic cysts. The presence of mucous cells in odontogenic cysts is challengeable and need more investigations.
