Maintaining marketability and controlling disease incidence in sweet pepper fruit at postharvest stage using ZnO nanoparticles treatment

Abstract :
Sweet pepper fruit is one of the important hot season products, which has a high nutritional and medicinal value, and its cultivation and consumption has been widely increased in the country. This fruit, due to the high surface-to-volume ratio, quickly loses its moisture in the postharvest stage. So, storage of this fruit in high humidity condition is one of the important strategies in maintaining its quality. However, in this condition, various diseases develop on the fruit and its postharvest life is limited. Therefore, in this experiment, the effect of ZnO nanoparticles treatments on maintaining quality and disease control of the sweet pepper fruit was evaluated. For that, fruits were treated with distilled water as a control and ZnO nanoparticles in concentrations of 0.1 and 0.2 and then stored at 7 °C and high humidity. At 0, 7, 14 and 21 days of the storage, the fruits were taken out from the storage and were evaluated. The results showed that, ZnO nanoparticles in both 0.1 and 0.2 concentrations, as compared to the control, effectively controlled the disease and maintained the quality in sweet pepper fruit. So that, the fruits treated with ZnO nanoparticles had more marketability and L * index and had more desirable firmness value. Meanwhile, the effect of 0.2 ZnO nanoparticles was higher than the effect of 0.2 ZnO nanoparticles in improving the shelf life of sweet pepper fruit.
