Abstract :
The mechanical supports are important elements in the functionality of common buildings. The quality of the piping or ductwork, their durability, and performance during the service period, and earthquakes depend heavily on the quality of their mechanical supports. In this study, the performance of common mechanical supports consisting of different sections is investigated from a structural point of view, when they were subjected to different earthquakes on the shaking table test. The amplification factors and dynamic response of the piping system are studied experimentally and compared with the amount proposed in the design codes. The results indicate that the prescribed equipment-to-structure acceleration ratio is too conservative for most of the cases except where a failure has been observed. Also, the dependence of the equipment-to-structure acceleration ratio is shown to be considerably higher for the direction perpendicular to the pipeline’s orientation and points to the necessity of its consideration in the design process. Moreover, the results point that for most of the cases, after a failure in the connection accompanied by sliding, the support system has been able to retain its stiffness and strength due to being locked again after a dislocation.
